Welcome from Head of School

Kim Wargo greeting a student

As I look out my office window at our girls running, playing, talking and working in the courtyard, I think about my hopes for our kindergartners just starting their school experience and our eighth graders nearing the end of their elementary school years. As a mother, an educator and the Head of the Katherine Delmar Burke School, I have high expectations for them as students and human beings.

We want our girls to thrive and excel. At Burke’s, that means acquiring academic skills, developing character and forging friendships that will have life-long value. We want our girls to run, explore and play while they learn. At Burke’s, girls experience the natural environment in and out of the classroom as teachers emphasize the connections to the world around us.

We want our girls to be learners, thinkers and doers. At Burke’s, girls ask questions and explore answers as a way of life. We want our girls to speak for themselves, expressing their thoughts out loud without being afraid of making a mistake. At Burke’s, girls do.

In total, we want each Burke’s girl to have the self-knowledge and confidence to be the best she can be. Let me share with you a few quotes from our most recent graduates:

“In every class, I was always challenged to consider why something happened, why it is the way it is, why do we care; why, why, why. My teachers not only asked me why, but encouraged me to ask the questions too.”

“Burke’s has taught me not only what 4 x 2 is or how to write a paragraph, but also to have confidence in my education and my ability to think for myself.”

“It is a privilege to say that I am a Burke’s girl. I am so grateful that my parents sent me to Katherine Delmar Burke School because the foundation I received is incomparable.”

Our girls graduate from Burke’s ready for the broader world of higher education, career, community and family armed with the skills and core competencies they need to realize their individual potentials.

I invite you to learn more about Burke’s as we begin our second century of educating, encouraging and empowering girls. Join me in watching a bit of recess, and stay for a most exciting nine-year adventure.
