Nature Speaks! Fourth Grade Landscapes and Poems
In conjunction with their study of California regions, fourth graders began the year with an exploration of American landscapes captured in the art of Georgia O’Keffee and Ansel Adams. Students viewed the Natural Affinities exhibit at the SFMOMA and were inspired by the ways each artist expressed a deep love for the land. They compared and contrasted their styles as well as examined their use of line, shape, color, texture, size, and value. Next, students painted their own landscapes, inspired by a photograph of a California region of their choice, on canvas boards using acrylic paint. They practiced drawing and painting with depth perspective including the foreground, middle ground and background. They also experimented with various brush strokes and textures. Students composed poems about their paintings that enhance the visual image and convey their love of nature.
