Celebrating the Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year was celebrated throughout campus, bringing together students, teachers, and families.
In Lower School classrooms, students learned about the many traditions associated with the Lunar New Year through stories and lessons, parent-volunteer-led activities, and special Makery projects.
Everyone was invited to help bring in the Lunar New Year and scare away any lingering bad luck at the annual Lion Dance Parade, led by our third graders! The parade stops at four campus locations with each dance featuring a different group of dancers and musicians, unique choreography elements, and a classroom chant. This year we were thrilled to welcome back Marissa Chin '02, who was a talented lion dancer in the Loong Mah Troupe, her mother Ms. Chin and her uncle Mr. Mah, who taught the lion dance to LS Music Teacher Ms. Mandelstein so Burke's could carry on the tradition after Marissa graduated. We are now in our 23rd year!
Upper School students enjoyed a special Lunar New Year celebration with presentations by the Mandarin language students that included a Dragon Dance, skits and songs, and stand-up comedy! With confidence and poise, they showcased their language skills and shared insights into the significance of Lunar New Year customs and traditions. Later that week, the AAPI Student Affinity Group gathered for lantern making, a mini Mandarin lesson and a treat to celebrate the New Year!
Many thanks to the members of the AAPI Parent Affinity Group who designed the Lunar New Year bulletin board outside the Front Office and the Mandarin Class with Ms. Li for decorating the hallways with red lanterns.
